About Annie

Dr. Annie Wong is an active teacher, performer, and collaborative artist. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Shenandoah University in Virginia, Master of Music degree from Mannes College The New School For Music in New York City (graduating with the Dean's Award), Bachelor of Music degree from the University of British Columbia (graduating with Top Honours), and ARCT Performer's Diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music (First Class Honours with Distinction). Her dissertation, Beethoven's Early Piano Sonatas in C minor: The Maturation of the "Little Pathétique" into the "Grande Sonate Pathétique", is an exploration of the copious similarities of form, tonalities, temporalities, and motifs in two indispensable masterpieces of Classical piano literature.

Annie has studied under the tutelage of internationally renowned pianists John O'Conor, Irina Morozova, and Jane Coop, in addition to working with distinguished pianists such as Richard Goode, Jon Kimura Parker, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Craig Sheppard, Hiromi Okada, and Leva Jokubaviciute. While pursuing her doctoral degree, she was twice the recipient of the prestigious Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges Award in recognition of her exceptional academic achievements. Her teaching experience ranges from private lessons to the university classroom in piano and music theory. She has served as Faculty at the Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy, and has taught Class Piano, Applied Piano, and Music Theory to undergraduate music students at Shenandoah University. Many of her students have achieved success at the Royal Conservatory of Music examinations in both practical and theory subjects, university auditions, festivals, and competitions.

In addition to performing across Canada and the United States, she was the winner of the Virginia Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition, Shenandoah Conservatory Concerto Competition, Bjorn and Lori Hareid Competition, as well as the Vancouver Women's Music Society Scholarship Competition. Aside from her diverse involvement in teaching and performing, Annie enjoys working as an accompanist at the Royal Conservatory of Music's Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists.

Annie is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.

I find no greater joy than helping my students to reach their true potential while enabling them to fully enjoy the learning process.

Striving to maintain the highest standard of music-making and greatest degree of enjoyment, I guide, nurture, and inspire my students through their musical pursuits. My teaching philosophy focuses on developing artistry and musicianship while advancing technique through a thorough understanding of how one's body parts interact harmoniously to produce the desired sounds.

Lessons with me include emphasis on proper posture that enables the acquisition of technical control for the production of a refined tone. My teaching studio is a stress-free and fun learning environment that fosters self-motivation, creativity, and a lifelong love for music. I equip my students with the necessary skills to apply knowledge, make discoveries, and become actively reflective learners.

Recognizing that each student brings strengths and shortcomings, I tailor lessons depending on the individual's background, experience, skills, limitations, and interests. I find no greater joy than helping my students to reach their true potential while enabling them to fully enjoy the learning process.
