Summer is almost here! If you haven't signed your children up for summer camps then now is the time to do it. There are many options for parents when it comes to summer camps. There is a summer camp for just about anything from sports to science or music to adventure. Some camps are more physical than others while some camps are more intellectual. The choices are almost endless. The best thing to do when choosing a summer camp is to pick one your children will actually enjoy. In this article we are going to focus on music camps and how they help create wonderful experiences for children.

Summer Music Camp Experiences

Making New Friends

All camps give children the opportunity to make new friendships but music camps are something special. Learning to collaborate with each other is a valuable skill that can be used later on in life. Collaborating with each other in a musical setting is simply magical. Children learn teamwork and accountability as they form bands or ensembles. In these bands or ensembles, children work together as a team learning songs that lead up to a final performance. In these group settings children must listen attentively to each other and learn how to lead others or follow musically. It all depends on the role that is being played. Some children will lead a group as a soloist or soloists and others will need to learn how to follow them. As children collaborate with each other they get to know more about themselves and others. Learning the likes and dislikes of others help children find what they have in common with each other, thereby helping children form bonds of friendships.

Creativity

Summer music camps offer children the opportunity to be creative, have fun, and explore. Making music is incredibly rewarding. Learning to write original songs, compose original scores, or arrange music by other artists and composers is a very creative process. This process can be an extremely fun collaboration in creativity. For instance, one person might come up with an original riff, lick, beat, fill, bass line, or musical theme and others will add to this musical idea by adding harmony or counterpoint, thereby creating something whole. When a band or ensemble work together to create a song or composition the end result is usually quite satisfying. Being able to play or perform this created song or composition for others is simply magical. Children will gain a sense of pride when they hear their musical creation and this in turn can create a wonderful lasting memory.

Having Fun

Music camps can be incredibly fun. Playing, creating and collaborating are all so rewarding. When running a music camp it's important to choose music that children like and are interested in. If a child likes the material they are learning then they will be motivated to master the music and this in turn should lead to a successful camp-end performance.
