Ariel Shetzen is a jazz vocalist and music educator who draws influence from a wide variety of musical genres. Music has always been a primary focus in her life. Ariel studied classical piano and theory with the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree with honours, in Jazz Voice Performance from the University of Toronto in 2017, where she studied with Juno-award winning vocalist Sienna Dahlen and acclaimed vocalists Alex Samaras and Christine Duncan. Ariel has also completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 2019 from York University.

In 2013, Ariel was awarded the Slaight Family Scholarship.

The Slaight Family Scholarship is awarded to two deserving students with aspirations of excelling in the music industry. The Scholarship entitles the recipients to one year of tuition for any campus, online or hybrid delivery program. Ariel was accepted and attended the Berklee College of Music for her scholarship.

In 2017, Ariel’s quintet was one of the winners of the TD Niagara Jazz Fest, Jazz for the Ages competition.

The TD Niagara Jazz Festival is an annual competition that is open to youth in the twenty-three and under age groups. Auditions are curated by a panel of professional jazz musicians with expertise in the following instruments: Piano, guitar, vocal, saxophone, trumpet, drums, organ, producing and more. JAZZ 4 the AGES has provided learning and performance opportunities for various young and upcoming musicians. A series of Master Class workshops are also made available for students and musicians featuring top musicians from around the globe. The festival partners with local schools such as Ridley College and Laura Secord High School to help bring this program to fruition. The TD Niagara Jazz Festival was created by co-creators Juliet Dunn, and the late Peter Shea. Juliet and Peter strongly believe in mentoring and empowering youth in their community and beyond. In 2015 they started LIVE.LEARN.JAZZ to inspire young people to get involved. Under this umbrella is a program called ‘JAZZ 4 the AGES’. Ariel and her trio, quartet, and quintet have performed and continue to perform at many Jazz venues throughout Toronto.

Ariel is passionate about bringing the joy of music to her community. In 2018, Ariel began leading the Danforth Jewish Circle Community Choir where she continues to lead today. The Danforth Jewish Circle is a wellspring of friendship, support, learning, ritual, and social and cultural programs based in the Danforth area of Toronto.

In 2021 and 2022, Ariel has led the Miles Nadal JCC Community Choir.

The Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre (MNjcc) has welcomed millions of people to the corner of Bloor and Spadina during the building’s seventy year history. The changing makeup of their membership is a testament not only to the vibrancy and diversity of the Annex neighbourhood but to Toronto’s own evolution. The Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre provides opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to be active, learn, connect and participate in a wide range of cultural experiences. Rooted in Jewish values, the MNjcc is open to all.

Ariel has also been on faculty at the Lakefield Music Camp where she helped students develop their confidence and creativity through learning music. The Lakefield Music Camp is located on the beautiful grounds of Lakefield College School, 150 kilometres north-east of Toronto, with full accommodations available. This retreat for adults and teens brings together amateur musicians and an exceptional faculty for one week of music instruction and creativity in a friendly and supportive environment. Participants can spend their days immersed in classical or jazz music or mix it up with a variety of styles including world and popular music. The program consists of a wide variety of choirs, ensembles, technique and master classes for intermediate to advanced vocalists and instrumentalists. Workshops designed for everyone, including beginners, are also offered for those interested in trying something new. Concerts by participants and faculty each evening offer many opportunities to perform or relax and be entertained.
