Benefits of Summer Music Camps

Summer Camps

Summer is right around the corner. Now is the time to sign up your children for summer activities if you haven't done so already. There are so many options for summer camps. There is a camp for just about anything from Lego and Coding to Sports and Space! Since studies have shown that learning music makes people smarter and happier we are only going to focus on summer music camps and why they are great options for so many families.

Summer is a great time to enrol your children in camps. The summer break is a long two to three months and taking a break for this long can really impact a student's scholastic life in a negative way. Students may fall behind academically if their brains are not stimulated enough. Learning music is an excellent way to keep your children stimulated, engaged, and interested!

Here are some benefits of enrolling in a summer music camp:

Builds Self-Esteem

Summer camps definitely help build self-esteem and self-confidence. When children participate in fun activities they are interested in they often excel. Our group Guitar Camps, group Ukulele Camps, and Rock Band camps all emphasize team work and accountability. All students work towards a common goal in our music camps which always culminates in some type of musical performance at the end of camp. An ultimate showcase of talent! Building self-confidence and self-esteem not only comes from working in a small group but also on working on harnessing individual skills both new and old alike. For guitar, students will develop hand strength and speed by learning scales and chords. For drums, students will develop timing while learning beats to songs. For bass, students will learn bass lines and arpeggios which will develop hand strength and speed. For Keyboards, students will focus on developing hand strength for stretching to play chord inversions as well as scale melodies. For singers, students will learn to breath and support their singing thereby improving their sound. All students will learn how to work and play their parts to songs individually and then play these parts with others in a group setting. Here students can put it all together by creating music. Our music camps teach the fundamentals of music creating a solid musical foundation so students can not only express themselves but they can also develop a real passion for music.

Develops Creativity

Making music is a creative process. Here, students can get creative by writing songs or parts to songs and then share them with other students in the camp. Together the group can then add more creativity and individuality to the song parts and ultimately create a song together as a team. Studies have shown that music helps children to think creatively and also teaches them problem solving skills. When writing songs students will learn how to solve problems with the music they are writing. This may involve working and re-working different sections to a song until the desired results are achieved. Students often will think about every possibility and imagine different solutions. Creativity or the creative process is arguably the most rewarding aspect of music camps.

Improves Social Skills

Collaboration is at the heart of all of our music camps. Making new friends, meeting new people, and being part of a team are all positive aspects of music camps and all make for a wonderful experience. As students learn to work together, their social skills improve. Being in a band or ensemble teaches students to be accountable for their actions, solve problems both individually and as a group, and to learn team work.

Things to Consider

When choosing a music camp it's important to find out who is running the camps. Some music camps are run by high school students with very little experience or by people who are unqualified to teach. At Neighbour Note, our music camps are run by industry professionals, university professors, or real life rock stars! We offer Guitar Ensemble Camp, Group Guitar Camp, Group Ukulele Camp, and Rock Band Camp here at Neighbour Note. Sign up today and have your children experience the Neighbour Note difference!
