JOHN COBB, BS

ABOUT JOHN

John is a certified teacher with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) with a focus on Elementary and Intermediate Piano. He has played piano all of his life. John grew up surrounded by live music in a family of professional musicians and music teachers who continue to play professionally today. During his early years in the Albany, New York area, John studied with local legend Stanley Hummel, a Julliard school graduate and concert pianist who recorded 11 albums. In university, John was a member of the Albany State Chorale, a 16 voice performance ensemble. He also accompanied various soloists some of whom have enjoyed significant professional careers. John graduated from the State University of New York at Albany, with a Bachelor of Science degree and began a career that took him to Atlanta, Dallas, and finally, Toronto. During those years, John maintained his piano skills: playing for himself, accompanying local soloists, and playing four hands with other pianists. John lives in Etobicoke, Ontario with his wife. PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

John believes the most important element in learning to play piano is to have fun. Part of having fun is the satisfaction in playing your favorite music.

Based on his own background, experience, and observations, John believes the most important element in learning to play piano is to have fun. Part of having fun is the satisfaction in playing your favorite music. The sooner a student can play familiar tunes, the more he or she will be receptive to improving basic skills. Anyone can learn (or re-learn) to play. Whether you are an adult or child, if you have access to a keyboard, and can dedicate regular practice time, you can enjoy the piano. Depending on age and ability, each of John’s students will receive a specific plan to allow them to achieve their goals.
